Unlike today the church was surrounded by open space. This part of town was undeveloped and in some ways abandoned after the the closure of the castle.
Doesn't the church look happy there with all that space around it :)

Tuning into this entrance let's us approach what I think is left of the inner bailey of the castle in 1400.
I think in 1400 the ruins and remaining buildings were likely a farm.
Just thought I'd show the inside of a medieval building. With no window glass, even on a bright day it was dark.
Back outside we can see that the map is showing us some ruins A large 3 bay stone building with secondary buildings forming a compound.
The map shows a westward path from the castle/farm to the town and town bridge.
Looking down this path I think of all the people who will have used it, and all the people who've lived in Trowbridge over 600 years. I wonder what those people would have thought about timbered homes being rebuilt in lovely Bath stone during the woollen trade, and now surrounded by many more homes with running water, electricity, sanitation ,cable TV and internet, and still surrounded by beautiful countryside.
